The historic site
The Buchenwald concentration camp (1937-1945) became a synonym for the crimes of National Socialism. Until 1950 the Soviets used the site as a special camp; after 1958 the GDR expanded the "National Memorial" into the largest German concentration camp memorial.
The memorial
After 1990 the memorial was redesigned and opened to commemorate the fate of further groups of victims. New exhibitions provide insight into the connections behind the crimes.
